A New Oustalet's Chameleon joins Millennium Academy Wake Forest Exotic Animal Collection

Meet Roddie our new Oustalet's Chameleon

Anxiously awaiting our new chameleon, our "Animal Camp" kids helped assemble his new housing, cleaned the leaves of live climbing plants and even gutloaded crickets with calicum. Shortly after setting up his housing we received a call, notifying us of the chameleon's arrival. Our new Oustalet's Chameleon - a native to Madagascar, is known as own of the largest chameleon breeds in the world. The camp kids have named him "Roddie". He joins our exotic animal collection as one of twenty other exotic animals.

Now that our new friend is settled in his new home it is time to get him checked out. Roddie will be going to Dr. Jennifer Hummel, at Rolesville Animal Hospital, for his first vet visit.

Roddie is currently about 14 inches long. He will grow to 30+ inches in length.

Millennium Academy's Animal Adventure

Does your child love animals? At Millennium Academy, our family of exotic animals is continually growing. We currently have about 18 exotic animals and the list continues to grow. Pictured is Tommy the Toad; he is a large cane toad (Bufus Marinus). We also have a variety of lizards, frogs/toads, rabbits and more. Our collection of animals will grow as we plan to attend an upcomimg animal show.

Millennium kids love our "Animal Zone". Our animals started out as part of our hands-on science program. Shortly after beginning animal science classes for our students, we began receiving requests from homeschooling families and other schools to attend our classes. Then this program further grew into trackout and summer camps. This summer we will offer camps that will also include special projects to include: special research, art projects, planting vegetables, breeding insects, assembling outdoor housing for the animals, building and maintaing and outdoor fish pond. In our camps the kids learn to care for and maintain the animals to include; housing, feeding, grooming, health & wellness, interaction/handling and hygiene. There are two significant elements to this program: 1 - kids generally love animals & 2 - they use their writing, math, science & technology skills as they research and learn about our animals. At the same time, the kids are physically active with both indoor & outdoor activities and have fun completing assigned chores.

We walked through our new classrooms on Friday, Febraury 26th and I am so excited to say that everything is coming along great. LandMark Construction has told me that estimated completion is mid April. We will be uploading new photos soon and will be soon up to our shoulders in boxes once we begin packing in early April. Our design will allow us to house students up to 3rd grade and we are also planning to offer 4th & 5th during the 2011-2012 academic school year. Our students are really looking forward to our move and finally our animals will have their own space. The animals will move into our science class and have their own area know as the Amazing Animal Zone.

We just completed second quarter assessments and parent teacher conferences. Our parents and teachers are so excited about the progress our students have made. Our differeniated classroom instruction allows each of our students to achieve without limits - which is a significant value of having small class sizes. Teachers are able to challenge students on individual levels. For example, all of our PreKindergarten students are already reading on a Kindergarten level while most are reading on a first grade level. Further, most of our students will end the school year on a first or second grade reading level. The significance of this is that this school year we are only offering PreKindergarten and Kindergarten programs. In general, children have a natural love of learning new things. We fuel that natural curosity with creative lesson planing, bright colorful interactive resources and state of the art technology; even employing resources that begin to prepare our students for standarized testing. Building a strong academic foundation for each of our students is our goal. I can not wait to sit in on next quarter's assessments. Nothing amazes me about these kids. New Construction is underway for Millennium Academy

(Millennium Academy's new floor plan is under construction)

Currently we are in a temporary location on Capcom Avenue in Wake Forest. However, construction is currently underway for our new location - which is just next door. In addition to our custom floor plan we will also have an outdoor area which we will use for our physical education program. Logan Fisher is our physical education teacher and is really looking forward to working with the kids on outdoor sports activities. Additionally, we are really excited about this move because it will allow us to expand our grade levels. Currently we offer PreKindergarten and Kindergarten. During the 2010-2011 school year Millennium Academy will also offer 1st - 3rd grade.

Living Fossil Sea Animal is Coming to Millennium Academy's School Fun Living Science Area

We are excited to add Horseshoe Crabs to our school's living science area! An ancient species, astonishingly adaptable, and important to our current ecology - the horseshoe crab continues to fascinate those who watch their yearly migration to the beaches. Did you know? 1. The Horseshoe Crab has 10 eyes. -A quick glance at the horseshoe will show the crab's two compound lateral eyes-- unusual because no other living Chelicerate possesses compound eyes. These are used primarily for finding mates, but the horseshoe has many more light-sensing organs. -There are 5 additional eyes on the top of its shell (two median eyes, one endoparietal eye and two rudimentary lateral eyes). The median eyes have cells sensitive to visible light and others to the ultraviolet range. The rudimentary lateral eyes are photoreceptors that become functional just before the embryo hatches. A clock in the anterior part of the brain sends out signals that control the sensitivity of the lateral and median eyes. -The tail also has a series of light sensors along the top and side that keeps its brain synchronized with cycles of light and dark. Additional signals from the small median eyes enhance the degree of adaptation to darkness, according to the amount of ultraviolet light those eyes receive from the sky at night. -On the underside of the crab, there are two ventral eyes, located near the mouth, which may help orient the animal when swimming. 2.Medical Uses for the Horseshoe Crab's Blue Blood The horseshoe crab plays a vital, if little-known, role in the life of anyone who has received an injectable medication. An extract of the horseshoe crab's blood is used by the pharmaceutical and medical device industries to ensure that their products (intravenous drugs, vaccines and medical devices) are free of bacterial contamination. No other test works as easily or reliably for this purpose. 3. Horseshoe Crab - Living Fossil Horseshoe crabs belong to the phylum of Arthropods, which consists of animals having an articulated body and limbs. The three major classes of Arthropods are Insects, Arachnids and Crustaceans. The horseshoe belongs to its own class called Merostomata, which means "legs attached to the mouth." (See Anatomy) Though they are called "crabs," a quick look at their taxonomy shows that they're not. In fact, they are most closely related to trilobites that existed 544 million years ago. Whereas the Horseshoe Crab starts life pretty small it can grow to over two (2) feet wide. Our students and children visiting our living science area will experience these timid sea creatures in our shallow indoor lagoon. They will have the opportunity to feed and watch these animals grow. The Horseshoe Crab is a new addition to our other exotic animals. From a Kid's Night Out to free tuition, there were plenty of smiles from parents looking for affordable quality academic & enrichment resources to kid's just looking to have fun! We offered give-a-ways from four (4) of our programs. Please see the winners below: 1. One (1) Month Tuition for our Super Readers Kid's Corner (Reading Program) Winner: Karen Lee (Wake Forest) I met this family at another event we attended. They love our school pets; especially one of our fish-"Oscar". 2. Kidz Zone VIP Package (20 hours of fun-This is a great chill-out place for kids with games, pet feeding area, video & more!) Winners: -Sharon Schulz (Wake Forest) -Kathy Keith (Wake Forest) I was so excited to see Kathy at the expo; she is a friend I had not seen over that last few years. I am excited to have her daugther "Megan" join our Kidz Zone. 3. One (1) month FREE DAY CAMP (Trackout Enrichment Camp) Winner: Matt Livingston (Town Manager of Rolesville) We enjoyed meeting Matt and his children and spending time with them in our craft area. 4. Color Me & Win a FREE "Kid's Night Out" Pass We gave out about one hundred of our coloring page entry forms. Kids could work on their entry at the expo or take the forms home and color, paint, add cut-outs etc. Then return their entry to our school by August 15th. One little boy who was really excited about getting his page completed right away. He looked around on our craft table and found google eyes for his clown. He added the googly eyes, gave his clown some color and turned in his entry. Take a look at his art work below.

Millennium Academy at the Rolesville Chamber of Commerce Business Expo

Did you get out to the Rolesville Chamber of Commerce Business Expo last night at the Factory? This was a fantastic family friendly event that allowed parents to visit vendors while their children were being entertained. This event included a great mix of business vendors (like our friends at Pettyjohns and IWP photography) and food give-a-ways. Milton's Pizza had pizza and a wonderful pasta salad and Texas Road House had ribs - Wow!

There was fun for the kids too! Our booth was located at the back of the soccer arena and across the walkway was a bounce house. The kids could visit to our neighboring vendors to get food & drinks, run through the bounce house and visit our table to make fun crafts when they were ready to cool down and get creative.

We are so excited to have won an award for the "Most Colorful" booth at the Rolesville Chamber of Commerce Business Expo.

That was the most fun I have ever had

at a "business" expo.

Our booth included balloons, high definition projection, our color scrolling sign, books, stickers and colorful crafts.

The children enjoyed beading, making bookmarks and puppets.

Just across from us was a bounce house provided by Jason & Anna Jordan. The kids appeared to have a blast jumping, sliding and running.

We are looking forward to participating in this event again next year!

Did you visit the "Taste of Wake Forest" this past Memorial Day weekend? Well, we had a great time. Millennium Academy will host the children's activities at the "Taste of Wake Forest" event on Saturday, May 23rd. This event will be held at "Festival Park" on White Street in Wake Forest; 12:00pm - 7:00pm. We will have face painting, balloons, arts & crafts, carnival styled games, a gold fish feeding pond & more! From live music and samples from local eateries ... I am sure there will be something for everyone to enjoy!

Everyone has been asking what will our school look like once it is completed. Well, I met with Mike this week and he gave me color photo of how the building will look once it is done. My reproduction of the this photo really does not do this building plan justice. It will absolutely beautiful with stacked stones, brick, stucco, a large front window with stainless steel accents. While construction has been delayed, we will still open on August 15th; so join us for a fun day! And of course we start our academic school year on August 25th. School Interior - Color board

We have been working on the interior design for the last few weeks. With all of the changes, I am really very please will the thematic coloring that we chose for our classrooms and our party room (The Kidz Zone). While we still have some work do I just want to update you on where we are.

Next week, we will making a few more additions for computer stations, reading areas, gaming areas and more!

Meet Our Real Estate Agent & Builder

Going through the process of selecting a site and designing the layout of the school has been a very smooth process. We are currently working with two great guys. They each have been very patient and accomodating of my requests for changes to our school's floor plan and have graciously answered all of my 1000's of questions. Who are these wonderful people? Donald Matthews. Don is a commerical real estate agent with Brassfield Realty and helped us find the building site for Millennium Academy. Don and I have probably spent more time talking about family, movies, children and animals then we do about real estate. He is very knowledgeable and professional yet personable. We are looking forward to a long business relationship with Don as we pursue future building projects. Mike Marguerat of LANDMARK Construction & Development. Mike is the builder for Millennium Academy and he is the president of Landmark Construction & Development. We selected this site for two reasons ... First because our building site is in a great location for a school (very close to "the Factory"). Second, after doing some research, we were pleased with the excellent reputation of Landmark Construction. We also have prelimary drawings of the exterior of the building. The exterior includes large windows, stainless steel accents and stone pillars ... it will be absolutely beautiful.
